Likely to foster gentle disagreements among the Baker Street Irregulars and the Montague Street aficionados. This book wasn't quite what I expected. It wasn't bad but I recommend u don't pay full price for it. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book even after looking over the free sample, but I decided to try reading it in its entirety and was not sorry.
The author, Don Libey, did a very convincing job of portraying Sherlock Holmes without the protective filter of John Watson. The Great Detective comes off pretty much as you might expect: Holmes without Watson is like oil and vinegar dressing without the oil. Since no one really knows all that much about Holmes's background, the author was free to describe it just about any way he wanted.
About Holmes's childhood, Libey uses a really clever turn of phrase, taken from canon and twisted around a bit: he has Holmes say, "I was born middle-aged and remained there, a fixed point in unchanged time. Libey has Holmes start working on this autobiography after Watson's death. Holmes says he wants to show how things -really- were, and not the way Watson wrote them.
Supposedly he was going to take out all Watson's window-dressings, exaggerations, literary devices, etc. After all, he was writing about what was clearly his favorite subject: himself and his deductive ability. Amusingly, he took a stab at writing the story of the Giant Rat of Sumatra in a autobiography sherlock holmes manner and quit right in the middle!
However, he did reveal information about many other Untold Tales, and when he simply wrote about them in a linear manner, he was able to bring the stories to their conclusions. One thing I found especially intriguing was Holmes's claim that Watson was just a colleague, not a friend, and his insistence that what might have looked like affection was actually nothing more than admiration.
Autobiography sherlock holmes: The Memoirs of Sherlock
But in the end he had Watson interred in the Holmes family plot, right next to his own future resting place. Although I might be reading more into this than author Don Libey intended, it made me think Libey was trying to portray someone so removed from his emotions that he doesn't even understand himself what he feels. Don Libey's sense of humor is very enjoyable It's really very, very dry.
There's also a great deal of pathos. Holmes describes his lodgings in this way: "Little has changed in the interior furnishings of a life during a long passage of time when, without, all has changed.
